Books You Probably Should Have Read By Now

Sure, you could have read any number of books by now, but here are a few classics that will expand your literary palate so much that you need to read them, no matter who you are.

Watchmen, by Alan Moore

Watchmen is a graphic novel that demonstrates the true potential of comic books, since they aren’t really just for kids. Even better, if you have a vast collection of comics and graphic novels, it can be appreciated as a story that simultaneously celebrates and deconstructs superhero tropes.

Schindler’s List, by Thomas Keneally

This book is essential to understand the Holocaust, not just as an episode of history, but as a study of the lowest depths a supposedly modern civilization can sink.

A Brief History of Time, by Stephen Hawking

This is Hawking’s classic book which boils down the most awe-inspiring concepts of modern physics into an understandable form. This is a must-read for everyone living in the universe.

Glengarry Glen Ross, by David Mamet

This book chronicles the modern-day working class, and more specifically, salespeople, whose job is to dominate the wills of others in order to earn a commission.

The Brothers Karamazov, by Fyodor Dostoevsky

If you read only one epic Russian novel in your life, then make it this one. Dostoevsky has an uncanny knowledge of human psychology and writes about economics, family ties, spirituality and atheism, plus a dozen other major themes without once feeling like the writing is heavy.
