Modern classic movies you need to watch in your lifetime

Here are a few movies you definitely need to put on your radar.

Donnie Darko (2001)

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this film as a troubled teen who is tormented by visions of the future. As a cult classic, this film captured youth angst particularly well, especially as this age group was coping with the confusion of a post-9/11 world when this film was released in theatres.

Bowling For Columbine (2002)

Michael Moore's controversial film won the Oscar for best documentary as it discussed the events of the Columbine High School massacre to address the US's addiction to guns.

City of God (2002)

This movie explores the slums of Rio de Janeiro and the lives of two boys who grow up amongst guns and drugs. With a cast that is made up mostly of nonprofessional actors, there is a sense of authenticity to the movie.

Super Size Me (2004)

This film examines the US's issue with obesity as filmmaker Spurlock eats only from the McDonald's menu for one month. What comes out of this movie are McDonald’s offering of more healthy choices and the removal of "super size" options.

No Country For Old Men (2007)

This modern-day Western stars Josh Brolin as a man who discovers a large suitcase of cash and Javier Bardem as a psychotic hit man. Watch this movie more than once and it gets better every time.

Ratatouille (2007)

This animated tale is set in the posh Paris cooking world and follows a rat who wants to be a chef. This is a movie that is told incredibly well with plenty of layers.
