Contemporary Classics in the World of Film

Movies don’t have to be old to be classics, and the 21st century, although still quite young, has seen countless classics already emerge. Here are three contemporary classics from the world of film that are well worth watching.

Donnie Darko (2001) Loaded with scenes of what is perhaps the most disturbing-looking bunny rabbit in all of film, Donnie Darko was an instant cult hit upon its release. Playing a troubled teen who is tormented by troubling visions of the future, Jake Gyllenhaal managed to perfectly portray the angst of the generation that would see the world change before its very eyes post 9/11.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) Jim Carrey proved to the world his acting could go far and beyond slapstick comedy in what turned out to be one of the most original and creative love stories of the 21st century. A fantastic examination of Alfred Tennyson’s famous quote “Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all,” Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind seamlessly integrates storytelling with the imagery of director Michel Gondry.

No Country for Old Men (2007) The Coen brothers seem to be a classic movie-making machine, proving their prowess once again with 2007’s No Country for Old Men. Revolving around found briefcase full of cash and an escape from a psychotic hitman, the story combined with the stellar performances of Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem make the film worth watching again and again.
