There’s so much more to find out about the Roman city that was devastated by Mount Vesuvius’ volcanic eruption. We do, however, know a few things. If you missed part 1, feel free to go ahead and read it! Here are some more interesting facts about Pompeii you might not know about:
1. The ash vs heat debate
There has been much debate over the cause of death of the people who perished in Pompeii. It was once believed that they died by ash suffocation, but recent studies suggest that they actually died instantly by extreme heat. Nobody was safe, even people in buildings were subjected to the hot surges that the volcano was exuding.
2. Great smiles!
Most of Pompeii’s citizens apparently had great teeth! This was discovered with modern technology such as CT scans, where the skeletal remains found in Pompeii were analyzed. Scientists were able to make 3D reconstructions of the skeletons, which allowed them to discover things about the unfortunate Pompeii citizens like their perfect teeth. This was probably due to their healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. Food for thought.
3. Two days of hell
The eruption of Mount Vesuvius lasted about 24 hours, but even two days after the fact, the city was still being covered in ash and molten rock. In the end, Pompeii was buried about 20 feet deep, having no mercy on anything living.
4. World Heritage site
UNESCO declared Pompeii a World Heritage Site in 1997, making it one of the most popular destinations in the world. Each year, millions of tourists visit the historical sites just to get the feel of the ancient city that was devastated many years ago.
